How to Find a Trusted Pet Groomer in South Africa

Not all groomers are equal. Here's exactly what to look for when choosing a groomer for your dog or cat.

Your pet cannot tell you if something went wrong at the groomer. That is why finding someone you genuinely trust matters more than finding the cheapest option.

1. Check their reviews and references

Start with Google reviews, Facebook recommendations and word of mouth from other pet owners in your area. Look for groomers with consistent positive reviews specifically mentioning gentle handling and good communication.

2. Ask about their verification

A trustworthy groomer should be willing to provide proof of their experience and identity. At Groomr, every groomer on our platform submits their ID, proof of address and police clearance certificate before being approved.

3. Visit before you book

If using a studio groomer, ask to see the grooming area before leaving your pet. It should be clean, well-lit and organised. Pay attention to how the groomer interacts with animals โ€” do they seem calm and patient?

4. Ask about their experience with your breed

Not all groomers are equally experienced with all breeds. A groomer who is excellent with Labradors may not have the same expertise with a Poodle's specific cut requirements. Ask directly about their experience with your dog or cat's breed.

5. Watch how your pet reacts

After the first appointment, observe your pet closely. Are they relaxed or distressed? Do they have any marks or injuries? A slight tiredness is normal, but excessive stress or physical injuries are red flags.

6. Trust your instincts

If something feels off โ€” even if you cannot pinpoint why โ€” keep looking. There are many excellent groomers in South Africa and your pet deserves someone you feel completely comfortable with.
